A New Chapter for Inclusive Mental Healthcare in the UAE

The UAE has taken another step towards more inclusive mental healthcare with the opening of Uniquely You Mental Health Center in Dubai, described as the country’s first publicly accessible neurodivergent-owned and operated mental health centre. Founded by neurodivergent psychologist Elaine Maichin, the centre aims to create a space where individuals can access mental healthcare without feeling pressured to conform to traditional expectations.
At the heart of Uniquely You is neurodiversity-affirming care. Rather than viewing differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia solely as problems that need to be corrected, the centre focuses on understanding each person's individual experiences, strengths, challenges and support needs. Its approach combines evidence-based therapy with trauma-informed and culturally responsive care.
The centre provides a range of services, including individual psychotherapy and counselling, family therapy, autism and ADHD assessments, DBT skills-based group therapy, workshops and support groups. Care is designed around the individual, taking into account factors such as identity, relationships, culture, environment and personal goals.
For Maichin, the centre is also deeply personal. Her experience as both a psychologist and a neurodivergent person influenced her desire to create a service where people could feel “seen, respected, and supported as they are.” Her professional experience across community mental health, schools, crisis services, correctional settings and private practice further shaped the centre's emphasis on personalised care.
Uniquely You arrives at a time when conversations surrounding mental health and neurodiversity are becoming increasingly prominent in the UAE. The centre's launch represents a move towards healthcare that recognises not only diagnoses, but the individual behind them — their identity, environment, relationships and lived experiences.
Ultimately, Uniquely You's message is reflected in its name: there is no single way to think, experience the world or achieve wellbeing. By placing acceptance, individuality and understanding at the centre of mental healthcare, the Dubai-based centre is contributing to a broader conversation about what truly inclusive psychological support can look like.
